Rockhounding Etiquette & Safety

Rockhounding has a good reputation in the Upper Peninsula, and that reputation is worth protecting. Every hound who parks politely, respects a fence line, and picks up somebody else's litter makes the next hound more welcome. Every one who doesn't makes a beach get posted.

Respect land and rules

• Know whose land you're on. Private property needs permission, and 'nobody's around' isn't permission.
• No collecting in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or other National Park Service land.
• Check current Michigan state park and DNR rules before removing anything.
• Keep it personal-scale and non-commercial — a bucket, not a truckload.
• Park where you're not blocking access, and don't drive on the beach or dunes.
• Leave gates as you found them, and don't disturb nesting birds or shoreline plants.

Respect Lake Superior

The lake is beautiful and genuinely dangerous. Water temperatures stay cold enough year-round to cause cold shock, and rip currents form quickly along piers and river mouths. Never turn your back on the waves while you're crouched over gravel, and skip the shoreline entirely during a serious storm or high-wave advisory — falling rock and sneaker waves are both real hazards near cliffs and breakwalls.

Take care of yourself

• Tell someone your plan; cell coverage disappears fast out here.
• Wear boots with grip — wet cobble is slick as ice.
• Layer up. The shoreline runs far colder than the parking lot.
• Bring water, food, bug spray in summer, and sunscreen even on gray days.
• Watch your back and knees; lift with your legs and take breaks.
• Carry a small first-aid kit and a whistle.

Respect each other

Share beaches, don't crowd somebody who's working a patch, and share what you know — especially with beginners. Honor a member's request to keep a specific spot quiet. Pack out trash, yours and anyone else's, and when someone finds the good one, cheer. That's the whole club in one sentence: friends who love rocks, having fun together, and leaving the shoreline better than we found it.
